What I was hoping to find out: From this source I was hoping to find out the impact the fast fashion industry has on the environment and how it damages nature and wildlife. I wanted to know whether there is anything being done to save the environment and I wondered whether the fossil fuels produced from the fast fashion factories would have an impact on global warming.

What I found out:

I learnt that major fashion brands are largely to blame for the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. The main reason behind this is because their connections to the companies who produce leather goods. Over 500,000 rows of data including brands such as Coach, Prada, H&M, Nike and New Balance all have been evidenced to have connections with these companies. ZBS (Brazil's largest leather company who are massively involved in Amazon's deforestation) supply around 50 brands' leather.

Stand.Earth conducted this study, which was surprising considering the fact that a large number of the brands have announced policies that they're now going to untangle themselves from the supply chains which contribute to deforestation. With the rate of deforestation increasing, it would seem that these 'policies' have no material effect - Gregg Higs.

Brazil faced criticism in 2019 and 2020 for not doing more to protect the forest from raging wildfires, the cattle industry was shown to be the single largest driver of deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest, mainly due to leather production within the fashion industry. The fashion industry must slaughter 430m cows by 2025 in order to keep on supplying customers with wallets, handbags and shoes.

Out of the 84 companies analysed by the report, only 23 had explicit policies on deforestation - but even they are 'likely' violating their own policies. Despite their pledge to protect the vulnerable region of the Amazon Rainforest, LVMH was found to have high risk of connections to Amazon deforestation.

"Brands have the moral responsibility, the influence and the economic resources to stop working with suppliers contributing to deforestation in the Amazon today, not in 10 years, not in 2025" - Sonia Guajajara.

President Jair Bolsonaro removed Indigenous people to make way for agriculture, mining and other development activities.

At the end of the day, we have to find other solutions and other alternative leathers that are not animal based and are not plastic based. There is really no excuse.

How reliable is this source?: I think this source is very reliable because it was written and published by the guardian who has insider information into matters such as these.
